Heya,
Some good and bad news, Baby’s first carb rebuild went pretty O.K. all things considered.
Before:
After:
Still need to paint some linkages, but she works, and I started the car for the first time this year. Also gotta wire an electric choke.
Got the dash back together, but I gotta dive back in and work on the plug that runs to the headlight switch, I am not getting a good connection. Bought some supplies.
the bad:
Trying to remove the exhaust manifolds today. Need I say more? Got the headers sandblasted and primed. Still need to paint them. Not that it matters much at this point because the manifolds are a process in frustration. Not really sure if I should heat up the engine by running it, or just continue with the PB blaster and maybe jack the engine up an inch to give myself room to work. I really didn’t expect this to be this involved.

ok, I will go spend 600$ I don’t have on a carburetor that will throw off my hood scoop alignment even though this one works perfectly fine ;)

Just saw this. Yeah... never try to take the exhaust off of the 400 (which I think is what you have?), the proper way to do it is remove the motor mount bolts and hoist up the engine a few inches. A real pain in the ass. Also if you ever do what CammedCTSV said, it isn’t hard to make a custom bracket using an aftermarket air filter to relocate the scoop while retaining the shaker function. Finally, beautiful job with the carb. Looks new!

Got the 403, but the solution is the same. I’m not going to bother if I can’t even get the front bolts off. Bought some kroil , if that doesn’t work, gonna give that 50/50 Atf/ acetone mix a try. If that fails, I'm paying someone.

Not going to lie, I had an exhaust leak where the headers attached to the heads and got so fed up with working on them I paid a shop to do it. Only the second time I’ve had work done by someone who isn’t me.

To quote Clint Eastwood, “a man needs to understand his limitations”. There is a certain amount of headache I'm just not willing to put up with. Thanks for your compliments on the carb though.
